Any general comparisons are pointless, you need your requirements,

Look in www.QAQForums.com, in the automated testing section, there's a
thread in there with a link to a comparison document

    Yes,

Mercury keeps you on hold for about an hour and a half with TS and knows the
answer to your question when you ask them.

Rational doesn't keep you on hold long at all, ask alot of questions and
finally finds something that they don't support or finds that you need to
upgrade. They advise you of one or the other and when you upgrade, they ask
lots of questions again and then tell you the don't support that.

My last answer didn't really help you, but I will give you something you can
    use now.

Both Rational and Mercury are about the same price so that won't be an
issue. Something you may not know is that both have a 30 day trial for there
product, I would strongly urge you to use both and see which one works best
with your system. Rationals language is VB like and WinRunner is Ansi C.
Both offer Technical support during the trial, if you need contact
information or want to discuss anything more on it, email me offline.

Main Difference ..........Price. I can only speak about the South FLA market and my personal experiences with both. I have worked with Winrunner Version 6.0 and currently work with Rational Robot version 2000. From my LIMITED experience with Winrunner compared to Robot, I found Winrunner to be LESS reliable and not as robust and Robot. As needs to be emphasized here, this is a SUBJECTIVE overview. Although in South Florida most houses are Winrunner houses, these companies tend to be smaller which would lead me to believe the price factor has something to do with it. I will refrain from any other observations because anything else would be to subjective and may not lead you down the right path.

There is a book on SQA Automation which I have mentioned in this news group previously. Not only is this a great book for automation strategies, but it has and entire section which overviews the different tools available and provides a comparison of all. This may provide you with the insight you need to make an objective choice. I hope this helps.

The book "Quality Web Systems" (Addison Wesley, August 2001) contains a
Tool Evaluation appendix, comparing major tools from Mercury, Rational,
Empirix, Compuware, Segue. This matrix will be useful for anyone curious
about the capabilities of the various tools it gives a general
comparison overview, but it does not substitute for an in-house evaluation
of the tool (see the Automated Software Testing book - as Nicholas
suggested - for the author's guidelines to help the test professional
prevent uninformed decisions concerning the use of automated testing
    tools).
Here is the link to a free download of the matrix: http://www.qualitywebsys.com/AppB.pdf
