    Installation Testing

    User Aidy Rutter (AidyR@TrustMarque.com.nospam) posted:

Is it worth automating installation testing?

And what kinda things do you look for? There are no requirements and neither
should there be the installer. Right?

Our main installation issues revolve around DLLs.

    Do they get registered correctly?
Which versions end up on the disc (i.e. if an old version was on the disc
does the new one overwrite it?)

Does the registry get update correctly?

There again if that stuff goes wrong you would probably find out during
    testing anyway.

By the way, on hols from the 13th until Jan 2nd.

    Hi Aidy,

We had done automation in past to test installation of a s/w. [We used
    SILK/QAP though]
Following points are to be tested if you want to "TEST" installation
    process:

o The sequence of dialogs (and related information, e.g. translation etc in
case you are testing a localized build)
o The count of total files which are getting copied
o The size of the installed folders/files
o The registry entries for the s/w
o Last but not least, the invocation of the s/w after the installation (and
    reboot, if required)

    Regards,

    Nitin

Why just a count of total files, and not see whether actual files exist?

What does invocation of the s/w mean?

Would an installation test with Rational installed make the machine
    'unclean'?

    Thanks

And don't forget the uninstall. We once missed a problem with a current
build that wasn't caught till shipment to Betasites because the uninstall
didn't delete all registry settings and the installer failed to create a
needed one. This wass not caught, because the key remained in the registry
    from a previous install :-((

Something to look into: Symantec's Ghost (or a similar product). We never
install the next build without re-imaging the system first. This problem
would not occur if this tool was used. It's been a lifesaver to our group!

    Hi Aidy,

you are right. I missed to add the other attributes for the files which are
getting copied. Practically, there's no limit where you would stop! Ideal
way would be, get a list of all the files (including DLL's etc.) from the
developers, and validate each and every file for size, timestamp, location,
    version etc... etc...

Invocation of s/w is, after installation (and restart if applicable), start
the application and make sure that everything is just fine. (If you are
expecting some registration dialogs, or some information etc...)

Making the machine "UnClean" depends entirely on the build and the
Install/UnInstall code of the build. My experience says the build in the
pre-release stage often do not clean-up the registry and/or the files. In
such cases, it would leave the machine "UnClean". As many of the experts
have already said, use a client machine which is dedicated to installation
(and backed with Ghost image). Then you can be sure of the machine state
    before you start the testing.

    My 2 cents

    Nitin
