    Testing dll files

    User Praveen (praveen@nous.soft.net) posted:

    All,

I mailed this transcription yesterday, I haven't received any response, I
checked my date, it wasn't Oct'2000. I thought, I should mail again. My
present project deals with delivering a .dll file to the customer. In this
case how can I go about determining the Memory leak errors. The Rational's
Purify works with .Exe files only, I beleive. In this scenario
how can I test the dll files. Assuming that I create an exe, that in turn
call the .dll file, will the purify detect the mem. leak errors in the dll
file. Any help on this would be appreciated.

    Thanks all.

I don't think a test of a single .dll is a very good method to use. A dll is
a library that will be used in context of some application. So it would be
my approach to identify the areas of the application that utilize the dll's
functinality and test that the dll in context of the application. If you
want to test the dll by itself you can write a test application that calls
all the dll functions and checks whether they perform in a proper way. But
that is definetly white box testing and should be done by the developers or
some programmer with an appropriate development environment.

    *my 2 cents*

you run the exe that calls the dll.
    That way the purify works.
Then you just filter which dll you want with the filter manager.
