    Scanning barcodes

    User Nancy Seitz (NancyS@tmtsoftware.com) posted:

Has anyone successfully used a scanning device, connected to the test
machine, to scan barcodes as part of a Robot script? Conceptually it seems
like it couldn't be done, but after reading some of the functions shared
here, I know there are some very creative folks contributing to this forum.
    Thanks.

What is you'd like to do? Pop up an input box during a script run and ask
for input, then use the barcode reader to input it? AFAIK, the barcod
functionality is not application specific, in other words, if you can get it
to work in Windows, it will work with any app, no different from a keyboard.

I recently got a barcode reader, and it basically reads into any app (Excel,
Word, whatever), as long as the barcode is valid.

Can you be more specific about what you want to do. Obviously you don't want
the script to pick up the scanner and the item to be scanned and actually
scan the item. Is it possible you can stub that part of the test with a
datapool or is scanning the item the test?

Thank you for your insight. What I am trying to determine is how the input
is distinguishable when inserted via barcode scanner as opposed to the
keyboard. My script calls for first creating, then updating a large
physical inventory of auto/ truck parts which are identified by barcode
labels. If the scanner translates the input into the same digits/
characters as the keyboard entry would perform, then I am not testing the
barcode input via the scripts, am I? As a relative gadget "phobic" I
unfortunately tend to think about this sort of thing illogically....sorry to
    seem obtuse...

Are you testing that the barcode scanner works?
Or, are you testing that your application works with specific data presented to it (which might have come from a barcode scanner, or might have come from a Datapool, or some other source)?

Many programs just want a particular thing filled with data. They don't know whether the data came from a barcode scanner, a user typing at the keyboard, or Robot filling in a value pretending to be a barcode scanner or a user. They just react to the data that has been presented to them.

So, are you wanting to test that the data input is correct (from a scanner), or that the application reacts correctly to the data that is input (from wherever it may come)?

The second instance to both questions
    a) that your application works with specific data presented to it (which

    And
b)that the application reacts correctly to the data that is input (from
    wherever it may come)?

With that settled I think the others can give you an idea on how to proceed with Datapools or using some other data sources in your scripts. I personally don't use scripts...but that is another story.
