Robot to Functional Tester

My current company is moving to Functional Tester from Rational Robot. I was told that my Robot scripts could not be converted to Functional Tester.

I have two questions:

1.) Can my Robot scripts be converted ?

2.) How would you compare Tester to Robot in terms of learning curves, etc...

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Re: Robot to Functional Tester

Hi Matt,
1. Robot scripts can't be converted to Functional Tester scripts.
2. Since I have been with Java based applications, I could come up with the merits of RFT in the Java side.

I prefer Functional Tester than Robot for Java & Web applications. If you know Java, the learning curve would be the time to explore the Help, which comes with RFT.
Since RFT is enabled with Java, we can use all the available Java APIs to make our scripts more flexible.
Easy to implement a automation frame work.
Once if we define a good frame work, then automation can be done rapidly using RFT.

Re: Robot to Functional Tester

Thanks you for the information, Sathis.

Do you suggest any books to read before I start this venture ? My biggest concern is creating a framework. This was a difficult task when I jumped into Robot.

Re: Robot to Functional Tester

Hi Matt,
I would like to suggest you the Carl J. Nagle's paper on Test Automation Frameworks.

http://safsdev.sourceforge.net/FRAME...Frameworks.htm

For RFT, core Java knowledge is enough. Then start with Rational Functional Tester's Help on Getting Started with Functional Tester. This would give fair idea on configuration, environment settings, record & play back and all.

Then define a frame work which would be suitable to your application as well as RFT. Consecutively, automation frame work would progress to get matured and stable.

All the best!

Re: Robot to Functional Tester

rational functional tester also comes with a vb.net interface standard if you have vb.net.
