captcha - how to iterate tests?

I tried doing a search for "captcha qtp" and didn't find much, so pardon if this is a redundant question.

I'm looking for a way to test a system with a graphical captcha system. It's for registration of new users and I need to automate the registration process.

Can someone point me in the right direction for figuring this out?

    Thanks.

Re: captcha - how to iterate tests?

Capcha has been discussed many times. It is fundamently impossible for QTP to read CAPCHA, and if QTP can read your CAPCHA then your system has failed.

The whole point of CAPCHA is to stop a program being able to read the value and force human interaction.

There are two possible workarounds but I must admit to not having to use either, but they shoudl work in theory

    1) In test, set up the AUT so that the same value is created each time

    2) In test, set up a value for the CAPCha image which contains the value which QTP can read (e.g ALT tag)

Obviously you need buy in for these ideas as they must be removed before go live

If you simply use the keyword "captcha" in this forum's Advanced search section (click the "advanced" search button in the upper right hand corner of any page), and then limit the search to the QTP forum you will get several hits.

But Robbie has provided reasonable feedback.

Thanks Robbie, that was my assumption and I like the alt tag idea.

Re: captcha - how to iterate tests?

You can ask your developer to bypass captcha validation for internal IP addresses. Hence your automation scripts will not have an issue. Captcha testing can be done through external IPs manually.
