QTP - Test data Handling with out QTP Datasheets.

    Hello,

I am designing a framework to test the Web application by using QTP . I don't want to use data sheets of QTP to maintain the test data due to maintianablity and scalablity issue.
Planning to use the database(mysql) for maintaing the test data.

Can you guys help me out.How best i can do this? and if u guys uses the external database with QTP so give me some example.

    Thanks

Curious... why do you think that maintaining a database would require less effort than maintaining what is in essence, and can in reality be an MS Excel, spreadsheet?

    Krytae,

I believe , Data sheets are not as much maintainable and scalable . I want to develop a framework where business layer and database will be different that will increase the reuseablity, maintainablity of scripts.

Databases are more work in maintenance than a spreadsheet..... Have a look at this, it might give you a few ideas.

Yep, any fool can use a spreadsheet. Databases need a bit more knowledge of computers.

Re: QTP - Test data Handling with out QTP Datasheets.

I'll play devils advocate here and say that if the database is well designed and thought out, it can be more easily maintained than a spreadsheet (note the word can). There are advantages to using the database such as being able to implement triggers and PK FK checks to help maintain referential integrity. However, getting the data into the database will not be as easy as a spreadsheet and would probably require a ui front end for data entry. However, with the UI front end, you can put in checks to ensure that fat fingers don't fail a test by validating the data before entry. Also, by the data being in a single source, if global data updates need to occur, writing a SQL script to do so will be easier than opening 50 something odd Excel workbooks.

I added a validation macro to one of my input spreadsheets after being fed up of other people filling them out incorrectly.

I did it so that no code change was needed if you wanted to add/remove columns or change validation. It was quite smart IMHO!

I am also in favour of using the database . If the database well designed we got lot of advantages to maintain the data and can best use it with automation scripts.
