# Thread: Estimation of Time for Components

1. ## Estimation of Time for Components

Does anyone have any relevant information on how to create time estimates for creating components in QTP? I am new to QTP and have no experience in doing this. I will be in training for QTP in the first week of February, but they would like a rough estimate now... How can I do this? Any help appreciated. Thanks! <font color="purple"> </font>

2. ## Re: Estimation of Time for Components

Assuming you are writing the scripts from test cases, here's what I do:

Assign a complexity rating to each test case, L, M, H &amp; U (U for unclassifiable, which basically means and exceptionally complex test case).

I use the following rule of thumb:

L = 1/2 day

M = 1 day

H = 2 days

U = done on a case by case estimate

All you need to do is adjust the time estimates based on your level of ability.

This is not a hard and fast rule but it gives you a starting point.

That seems like it would make sense. So, not many components ever take less than 4 hours to complete in your experience?

Not really because I included the time involved in understanding the test case, the obtaining of the data, testing the script and peer review in the time estimate.

Ah, ok then. I was only looking at the components minus the data and peer review, but if that includes all, then that would make more sense in my mind. Thanks so much for responding, this is pretty helpful.
