Recording Scripts with QTP 9.0 in Firefox

    Hi all
I am now recording my scripts completely in Firefox
afer my Efforts to run the Scripts recorded with IE on Firefox
Did not work ............for QTP 9.0

Now I am not having a good time here too
as many statemnets use co-ordinae locations like
    [ QUOTE ]

    Browser("User Login ").Page("Edit_54").WinObject("MozillaWindowClass") .Click 731,345
    WinObject("MozillaWindowClass").Click 123,23
    Browser("User Login ").Page("Add_30").WinObject("MozillaWindowClass"). Click 162,299

    [/ QUOTE ]

Can we write statemets that actually recognise objects without refering to its location on Window

If anyone has used QTP 9.0 for recording on Firefox 1.5 +
    Please Let us know

Re: Recording Scripts with QTP 9.0 in Firefox

Look in the QTP readme.html file and I think you will discover that QTP will only record on IE - hence your problems.

When something doesn't work, generally the best place to start is the docs / help

Re: Recording Scripts with QTP 9.0 in Firefox

Yuva, I suggest you read the Ver9.0 documentation again. Quoted from the 'What's New' chm - "You cannot record tests on Netscape Browser or Mozilla Firefox"

Tests recorded on IE can be replayed on Firefox but QTP does not record tests on the browsers mentioned above.

Re: Recording Scripts with QTP 9.0 in Firefox

    Hi Yuva,
Can You Please Explain how do we write statements in QTP for FireFox without having to mention location ..as default recording for QTP in FF is getting X,Y co-ordinates...

I know that Officially Mercury Websites says It supports recording in FF 1.5 + , Netscape 8+
But To tell You It really depends on your application Under test that how the Recording works in FF or Netscape..
For My Application the recording in FF is really pathetic...
Now As far as Playing the script recorded on IE is concerned..
It really fails whenever javascripts are encountered
The Script Recorded on IE when palyed back on FF do nothing
when there is a javascript call ....
also I tried Recording only those statements in FF for whcih
they failed to execute ...Even this did not work for me
Can we Write a Script in Expert view that is browser independent???

    To Give Specific example

The HTML page has something like
    [ QUOTE ]

    <div align="right"><a href="#"><img src="someimage.gif" alt="practices" width="21" height="17" border="0" onclick="MM_openBrWindow('pop_Practices.html','',' width=450,height=280')" /></a>

    [/ QUOTE ]

So when we click on image The required HTML page opens
in both IE and FF atleast manually

When The Click action is performed by QTP on IE it is Fine
    But
Action Recorded for same in FF does not work in FF
and that recorded in IE too does not work in FF

    Can anyone provide some advice??

Re: Recording Scripts with QTP 9.0 in Firefox

I have had some success ... with 9.2
where you record in IE and it can play it back in FF and IE
for standard recording. ( however its not good at recording in FF) - the only snag is when you use low level recording (when its sees everything as windows not browseres you have to mess with the "settoproperty" of items only the fly
(such as if this doesnt exist (with current OR settings) ... then change them to ... whatever (as you suspect another browser. - OR - you can separately record FF and IE for low level operations and have a flag (That oyu determine in another part (read from file - env variable etc).

Perhaps crawl at the 9.2 upgrade - if your already paying maintenance - this shouldnt be too much of an issue.

You can record in IE and use same script in FF with minor changes.

Sadly, this thread demonstrates my point so well…

    My 2 cents ON...

Tread lightly and think hard about investing time normalizing even a small number of scripts across 2 browsers, let alone 3 or more.

Rather, use some light manual testing through some of the primary workflows to "bless" the non-MS browsers as "compatible". Unless you have a very unusual audience, let the tiny number of customers using the non-MS browsers (MS owns like 95% of the market on Windows) find the incompatibilities in the deep or lightly used application workflows.

Invest the time saved--an hour, ten or 1000--automating more test cases using the IE browser--thereby improving automated test coverage, as I feel it is better to have 100 automated test cases that only run under the MS browser than 50 that run under two or more different browser types.

Don't drink the kool aid about seamless cross-browser compatibility, no matter the tool vendor--it's a fool's errand.

    My 2 cents OFF...

There are other comments on this forum (and probably all of the tools forums) on this matter, search using the key phrase (with quotes), "cross browser".
