Validating the Input data form excel sheet

I have to read an excel sheet with fields like SSN, DOB, Address etc to create new accounts.
    My question is:

    1. Do I have to read each row from the excel sheet and validate them and
create a new excel sheet with good records to process the creation of new accounts?
If so what are the possiblilities of validating these filelds?
write some general functions and use them in the script? Is there general functions for validating ssn, address etc. ( i searched the web i cant come up with one)

    2. Or can i format the excel sheet in such a way only valid data can be entered for fields. like for SSN(only numbers, only 9 digits).
    How to achieve this?
SO excel sheet has these facililties?
Becos i should start my automation to create accounts only with all good
    rows with good data.

Anybody has any function to validate SSN, DOB &
    Address.

    Thanks for any input.

Re: Validating the Input data form excel sheet

Well you can go in for any approach i would say

    1. Have validation in your excel sheet only. I am not aware of upto what extent you can put validations in excel.

    2. Have a column named validated in the sheet with initial value 'N'. As you start processing the row and find that data is valid make it 'Y' and during account creation, only use rows which have 'Y' in validated.

Re: Validating the Input data form excel sheet

It all depends on your validation rules. If the rules are not so complicate, you can simply verify them in excel (e.g., SSN is 9 only 9 digits, etc)

BTW, ... why don't you validate them with your application (application under test)? Your application might have different validatioin rules for creating an new account. To me, your validatioin rules of test data shall be exactly from the application's validation rules.
