    WR to QTP Experiences

    From the Lousy Editor thread:

    Jordan,

Yep, you betcha. Coming over from WR to QTP was painful. I like the IDE & debugger in WR alot better than QTP, but have learned to live with QTP's editor short comings.

I found the things that annoyed me most in QTP were the inability to edit the GUI Map (Object Repository in QTP speak) through a normal text editor. The file is in a binary format, blech! In WR I could on the fly work the GUI map in notepad and do quick edits when needed. Also, the debugger is flaky in QTP. Sometimes when I set breakpoints it gives a weird error and never really breaks correctly.

I think the object recognition in QTP is stronger. I had it recognize both Web and Terminal Emulator objects pretty well. Better than what WR could do.

So there are trade offs. I just know that a lot of WR people are going to be screaming the first time they work with QTP.

Jim do you think it wothwhile raising the OR editing shortcomings with Mercury ( I agree the debugger needs a bit of stability).

Just out of interest was the Terminal Emulator used on Mainframe?

    Re: WR to QTP Experiences

    Mark,

Yes, the Terminal Emulator was used to test against a mainframe application. It was used on an Extra! Terminal Emulator in 3270 mode. We used Merc.'s TE plug-in to talk to the Extra! session.

And, yeah I (and many others) have raised the Object Repository AND Script/Action editor(s) shortcomings with Mercury. I did most of my bitchin to the Merc. SE I worked with at the client site, and he agreed with me. But was saying that it might be awhile before the editors get improvment, they are focusing on platform support first.

Jim I've used Mercury's LoadRunner on the mainframe using their RTE add-in. DOes QuickTEst use Mercury's Powerterm emulator or does QTP have a different one?

    Thanks, Mark.

    <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica">Mark,
QTP uses a Plug-in module that you buy from Mercury for the Terminal Emulator support. I do not know if it uses the Powerterm emulator. The QTP TE plug-in supported the Attachmate Extra! TE software, which is what was used on the project.
Sorry, can't be of more help than that.
