Do I need the dot?
I wish to use a property such as name to identify an object using dp.
the spy shows that it has a period in the description
when it is in the code do I need a backslash?
Experimentation would probably lead to the answer, but maybe someone can explain this to me.
Yes Kevin you need to use escape character here, Otherwise QTP will treat as regular expression pattern
A dot would be treated as a pattern. Dot means match any character except new line. So it will match a literal dot also. your "this.isthevalue" will match "thissisthevalue", "thisaisthevalue", if you want to be accurate use "this\.isthevalue"
It worked without the slash. To be more accurate and clear I could also use the slash. Tarun explained it well above.
