It is likely that he's got different Windows region settings. Under Control Panel / Region and Language select the Formats tab, click Additional Settings. This opens the Customize Format window. On the Currency tab, it will show you the currently selected Currency Symbol.
CDbl will strip any currency symbol out without trouble but if you don't have $ there, it will throw a runtime error if your number has a $.
