QTP Copyrights violation

    Hi All,

I am planning to write articles on QTP (Quick Test Professional). If I use the QTP screenshots in my technical blog, is that a copyrights violation?

    Thanks in advance,

    Seetaram

    Re: QTP Copyrights violation

    Hi,

I think there should not be any issue using QTP screenshots. I have seen many good QTP websites which use screenshots.

Though I'm not sure if they have taken any permission for the same. I think other senior forum members will be able to give some detail on this.

    Re: QTP Copyrights violation

    Hello Seetaram

I researched this issue when I was a technical author.

Under normal circumstances, there is no copyright issue with using screenshots in reviews, technical articles, blogs etc as they are covered by the "fair use" policy. This is a guidelines rather than an absolutely fixed rule but in general as long as you don't reproduce the whole of the QTP manual, or claim that QTP is your own work, or try to copyright the screenshots yourself there is no problem. Also you should acknowledge HP's copyright.

Another of the guidelines is that your work should not affect the market for the product. Most software companies take the line that having more articles and blogs about their product will be good for them in the end as it can work like free advertising, so they are OK with it. What is not OK would be if you show for example a screenshot with your QTP licence codes as that could "affect the market"...

Of course, many people ignore these guidelines.. for example I saw one "exam dump" site where they had ripped off the certification questions for a product, including the screenshots (I don't know how- leaked from the exam writers or just reproduced it themselves) and put their own watermark on the screenshots.. that is not "fair use" in any way

p.s. this article answers this question and also mentions a couple of the things I have mentioned above:

    Re: QTP Copyrights violation

    Thank you very much CK...

Answer is pretty much helpful. I was really worried about the copyrights.

Once again, thank you very much.
