    Please ask WinRunner questions in the WinRunner forum - if you still have a question after reading the User's Guide where your question is answered.

    Understanding the GUI Map

    The GUI map enables you to create test scripts that can be used to test different versions of your application. It contains information about Graphical User Interface (GUI) objects in the application under test. WinRunner uses the GUI map to help it locate objects when it executes an automated test.
    The GUI map consists of one or more GUI map files. It always includes a temporary GUI map file which contains information about the most recently learned objects. It can also include additional GUI map files. Use the GUI Map Editor to view, modify, load, and save GUI map files.

    GUI map files contain logical names and physical descriptions of objects in the application under test. It learns this information when you record a test or when you use the Script Wizard to learn all the objects in your application. Each object is learned according to the window in which it located.
    A logical name is intuitive and readable. WinRunner assigns each object a logical name so that you can easily understand statements that appear in a test script. For example, the following test script clicks an OK pushbutton in the Open window:

    set_window ("Open")
    button_press ("OK")

    The logical name of window is "Open" and the logical name of the pushbutton is "OK".

    The physical description of an object contains properties that uniquely identify it. Each property has a value. The properties and their values are presented in the format property: value .

    For example, an OK pushbutton has the physical description:

    {
    class: push_button,
    label: OK
    }

    The class property has the value "pushbutton" and the label property has the value "OK".

    When you run a test, WinRunner reads a statement which contains the logical name of an object. It then searches the GUI map for this logical name. The logical name points WinRunner to the physical description in the GUI map. WinRunner reads the physical description and searches the application under test for an object that matches the description.
