<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica">A short answer:
You will want to play back your script(s) anytime there is a change in the app or architecture in order to catch any defects that exist in the areas exercised by your scripts. The playback can run unattended, leaving you to work on other things.
This is not a continues record and replay.
This is once you recorded as a working product.
Then after some period same product we want to test again.
This time you were using earlier recording scripts only , we are not going to each time recording and replay. This process we are using as a regression tesing for different patches for same base version.

The Record/Playback feature is a big selling point for Mercury and other Automated tools manufacturers, but you should really learn to script in TSL. That will solve your issues with the limitations of Rec/Plbk. Scripting will allow the use of data driving so that when the application changes all you have to do is change the data source, not all of the tests themselves.
Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.
