    Manual Scripts & Winrunner

Is it necessary to have manual scripts in addition to automated scripts? I am working on a web application where the manual scripts are required. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of automated testing?

    Re: Manual Scripts & Winrunner

Not all scripts can or should be automated. There is definitely a payback on automation, but if your cycle rate is low, this only needs to be done one time per build with one data set, once every couple of weeks/months/.... then the likelihood is high that you won't break even.

There is a "rule of thumb" that has been derived from many years of application of WinRunner - it's often quoted by Mercury's salesforce and Professional Services. A test must be run at least five times to break even. This assumes a couple of things. (1) a skilled efficient WinRunner developer and a business process of eight major steps or less in complexity. If your WinRunner development skills deviate or so does your business process, well, as they say in the automobile business, your mileage may differ.

There are all sorts of intuitive tests that may not be appropriate for automation as well, unanticipated conditions that you just would not normally think to code for.

    Hope this helps,

    Briefly -

Yes, one should expect that it doesn't necessarily pay or make sense to automate everything - so you can expect to have manual scripts.

If you search this forum, you find discussion about this very topic as well as links to white papers, etc.
