WinRunner capabilities - HELP !!!
User vijja2002 (email@example.com) posted:
I am trying to identify the best tool that can be used for automating
the functionality testing of two of our windows based applications. I
am trying to automate these two core products of our division (Baker
Jardine, London), PIPESIM 2000 and ProdMan. The first is network
simulation tool(heavy on the engineering side) and the latter is a
data management tool. Both are very much GUI driven applications.
They both operate on Windows platforms.
I have been using an evaluation copy of Rational Visual Test 6.5. The
scripts I have developed were distributed on our test center machines
and the performance varied depending on the
- Windows platform
- the locale it was tested on - scripts were less stable on
non-English machines and often crashed midway through
These are some of the capabilities I am expecting from WinRunner. Can
any of you guys advise me on how WinRunner handle the following
1. Does Winrunner has the ability to respond/pause until a
specific event is completed (or started)? e.g. Does it have the
ability to recognize message box windows, dialog windows (Open, Save
as etc) etc by giving it a unique ID. This is something that VT could
not do. Say for e.g. when a user action results in display of Save As
dialog box, can the scripts be paused until such time as it appears?.
But VT could not give such windows a unique ID so I had to time these
2. How does it lends itself to results comparison? Is it
independent of screen resolutions, image colours etc. This is one of
the problems I had with VT as the image colours varied from one test
machine to another, although numerically (and graphically) results
were the same
3. Can you execute test scripts on clean test machines and log
results. What are the specifc details you can log (in general)
4. Can you jump to a specific position in the test run (while
you are running the test scripts??) For e.g. say you have automated 5
tests and you start the test run from ist test but want to jump to
the 3rd test. Is this possible? Or can you choose only to run the 3rd
5. Can you terminate the running of scripts before completion -
I had difficulty in terminating the execution of the scripts midway
through a test run when using VT.
Re: WinRunner capabilities - HELP !!!
Please contact the vendor for a proof of concept. I see nothing in your list of questions that WinRunner cannot do. Screen resolution can be managed by WinRunner for you. This is the only near-issue I see.
