    ****** !!!!! - DDT excel table problem

    User (david_burke@dmr.com.au) posted:

    Hi all,

I have a problem which I can not solve with a DDT excel table.

I am trying to use excel as a data table. When I look at the excel table
through excel, I can see the information that I want to read.

But when the table is loaded, the info is not displayed and the value
    #NAME? is displayed instead.

I do not understand why I can see the values in excel but not as a DDT data
    table.

    Any help Please

    Regards

    David Burke

    Hi David!

In Excel the line with the number 1 contains data... but not, if WR opens
the file... The first line will always contain the name of the column. So,
if you work with your tables with excel, you must take care of the first
line's containing a string that will appear in WR as the column-header.

Hope to be of some help

    Guys,

yesterday a team collegue of mine bombarded me with fatal end-user/tester
    feedback.

    Try this:

Open any existing test, open its data table, and select all cells by
clicking on the "cell" just to the left of the first columns header cell.
    Select Edit/Copy.
    Create a new test.
    Again select all cells.
    Select Edit/Paste.
    WinRunner crashes.

There are dozens of varations on this, some with Excel involved.

Were talking about WR 6.02 here.

The table editor really seems to be full of bugs. :-(((((((((((((((((((((

    Hi David,

The #NAME? error value occurs when Microsoft Excel doesn't recognize
text in a formula. If you need a formula in that cell try creating it
in the data table instead of the Excel spread sheet. Also, remember
that if you create the data table trough Excel, you must delete
Sheet2, Sheet3 and save it as a Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 workbook.

    Hope this helps.

    User (john@mcilwaine.com.au) posted:

    Hi David / Michael

I thought that the excel restriction on Excel 5.0/95 went out with
6.02, I certainly now use excel97 without worrying about WR being
able to recognise it (I do admit that it was a HUGE problem with V5
and even early versions of V6 (we sometimes got advance copies before
general availability so suffered from a few bugs that got sorted b4
    the GA verion was "set".

In terms of multiple sheets, the real trick as far as I can
determine, is to make sure the sheet you want to access in WR was
the "active" or "front" sheet when the excel workbook/spreadsheet was
    saved.

My biggest bitch with the way the table stuff works in WR is that it
seems to load it into memory and there is no way to "flush" the copy
that works reliably without exiting and restarting WR... ie you run a
test in WR (even single stepping) and spot a problem with either your
column names or want to change the data, go to excel and fix the
spreadsheet, save it etc and WR, bless it socks, just ignores your
changes because ther is (OK I can not find it..) method of flushing
    the current in memory copy.

This issue of in-memory is not a trivial one... it has HUGE impacts
on any script that has the temerity (no... "the stupidity" is
probably better) to have in excess of say 1000 rows inb terms of
    performance

DDT is a superb set of tools, it just could be even more superb if
they could solve a couple of issues.

In terms of your original question... we almost... well actually
100%..never use the inbuilt data table stuff with DDT... call me old
fashioned but I like to have some control over things so I always use
excel (native) and put the spreadsheets exactly where I want them to
    be, not where WR decides.

I at least get to blame only myself when the data is in the wrong
    place or the wrong version.

Therefore... I always need to put column names in row 1 and never see
    an issue like you describe

This probably hasn't helped but it may point you in a rasonable
    direction

    Cheers
