Apologies to the moderator... I asked this question elsewhere in the forum...but
I work for a large elec/gas utility in the IT dept. The IT dept has 2 s/w test orgs. One uses the Mercury tools, mine uses Segue. However, we've not used a test mgmt tool and I'd like to leverage TestDirector, since the company already has a license.
I'm looking for general TestDirector experience in terms of best practices for installing and configuring to your org (and level of effort), what about the upload of existing test cases and working out the conventions?
Of most importance, does anyone have experience with integrating the Segue tools w/Test Director. I don't think we're going to go with the Quality Center (at least not now)...so specifically looking for insight to the integration of Test Director with Segue's SilkTest and SilkPerformer....how hard to work the api's???? are there api's?
Are there white papers other than on the Mercury site that I can get referred to?
as fyi...been trying to get the org to use a test mgmt tool for 3 years and just now a huge enterprise CIS upgrade project is going to finally acquire TD.
I am the automation manager (not a tester, not a programmer.... know just enough to be very dangerous)...see the big picture and see the integration and impacts down the road type.
Re: Looking for general TD experience/best practices?
You are the automation manager for your part of IT, yes? Have you talked to the corresponding resource on the Mercury-based team? That's where I'd start.
Is the overall IT direction exclusively Mercury tools or will Segue still be a viable option for automation?
Do you intent to continue automation with Segue, migrate new automation efforts to Mercury, or migrate everything to Mercury?
How are you thinking you might use TestDirector: automation repository, reporting mechanism, defect management, automation triggering / scheduling tool? That will govern how much integration you need to do and of what type.
