Migration of Defect Data
We are using a defect tracking tool and we got around 2000 defects in this tool as of now we need to migrate this(defect data) to test director as test director is not compatable to the defect tracking tool what do you think is the solution is?
The defect data was compressed and it is in delimited format, from delimited format i imported the data to excel(around 40 excels files) from excel i exported the data to test director. For each row in excel sheet the testdirector is taking as one defect so when i am exporting everything i am getting around 1,50,000 some defetcs which is completely wrong because i need to get only 2000 defects in test director.
Can someone tell me where i went wrong ?

Re: Migration of Defect Data
It all depends on the way your "old" defect tracking tool stores its data and on what kind of reports it can produce.
In any case, the first thing to do is to map defect fields from your "old" tool to TestDirector, creating user defined fields (UDFs) in TD as needed (for instance, if your "old" tool assigns a defect number to each defect record, you'd define an UDF for that field - you won't be able to have the TD defect ID the same as the "old" number).
Then, if your "old" tool can produce an Excel sheet with all the defects data, the easiest way would be to use the Excel add-in for TestDirector to import the data to a TD project.
Another choice, if your "old" tool as an API, is to develop a script using that API on one hand and the Open Test Architecture on the other hand to perform the import.
The scripting option is also available if your "old" tool stores its data in a database with an API that you can access from a script, for instance if that DB can be accessed through ODBC.
