Similarly in WinRunner there are two functions (BTW,we are widely use them):
1. dos_system () -- Executes a DOS system command.
2. invoke_application ( file, command_option, working_dir, show ) -- invokes a Windows application from within a test script.
Just to make sure I understand ADEMIN's reply, you don't need Mercury's automation tool WinRunner, and could even use another automation tool (e.g., Rational's Visual Test)??
QUALITY . . . is like buying oats. If you want nice, clean, fresh oats, you must pay a fair price.
However, if you can be satisfied with oats that have already been through the horse . . . that comes a little cheaper.
VAPI (Visual API Tool) is Mercury Tool, comes with TestDirector (take a look at TD CD).
It's not a testing tool, but script runner tool. It's able to execute ANSI C script. Using this script you can call TestDirector API functions, any DLL functions, execute any applications or batch files)
