    Re: HTML & URL modes

    Hi,

The following is a good explanation of the difference between HTML and URLmodes of recording which was posted in yahoo groups by Brian...I am pasting it for your reference...

" In HTML mode you have what is considered a 'context sensitive' script (this means your script may contain functions like web_link, web_image, web_submit_form in addition to the basic web_url and web_submit_data functions) these context sensitive functions rely on the 'context' of the previous page (think like a user looking at the page they requested and clicking on a link in that page.) This mode hides(from the script) the underlying resources that are downloaded during replay.

In HTTP mode you will generate explicit URLs for every web page request (including all form field data in the web_submit_data.) This makes the scripts more verbose about the underlying HTTP requests being made and often will mean that more correlation of dynamic values will need to be done. This mode hides(from the script) the underlying resources that are downloaded during replay.

In URL mode you will see every HTTP request recorded (all the jpgs, gifs, css, etc) and the script will not dynamically download the actual resources referenced on the site.

It used to be that the URL mode of recording was more robust/reliable/accurate but those days have long since passed with the introduction of LR 7.02. Since then the preferred method is the HTML mode scripts (unless you have specific reasons for using the explicit URLs created by the HTTP mode.) During recording, a script will be generated with the context sensitive functions if Vugen can determine the appropriate context to make such a (web_link/image/submit_form) request for the replay. If for some reason it can not determine the 'context' for the user action it will record the static URL or Form submission.

Obviously you may have different reasons for choosing one recording/replay mode over another which can depend on you particular needs.

The Extra resources recording is a method whereby LoadRunner will capture other resources that are not loaded via standard HTTP references (eg an image loaded via a javascript call.) Because LoadRunner doesn't execute javascript on the client if it does not record those resources statically in the script it will not download them during replay. So, there are two ways that loadrunner actually chooses what to download during replay (one is via the "Mode=" and the other is via the EXTRARES section of the function call.) If you specify "Mode=URL" in your script it would be the same as unchecking the "Download HTML resources" in the Run-Time Settings."
