difference between HTML Adv Rec and URL Rec

What is the difference between HTLM Recording(Advanced-a script containing explicit URL) and URL Recording. Both the recordings look similar.

Re: difference between HTML Adv Rec and URL Rec

Basically both modes allow script to be recorded with different options.

    HTML Advanced
It allows gives you the below options for non-html components:
    1. Record within current steps (non-HTML comes as EXTRARES)
    2. Record with seperate steps & use concurrent groups (non-HTML comes in web_url under web_concurrent).
    3. Do not record (non HTML - skip recording)

    URL Based script

If you check, URL based mode clearly states that
'Use this mode to simulate former (HTML) URL based mode with all resource recorded'

    It gives below options:
    1. Create 'Concurrent group' for non-HTML resources
    2. Create web_custom_request only (This option is not available in HTML-based script)

    Hope this helps

you can change the record settings and then regenerate the script - this will show you the differences between different recording modes really easily

Re: difference between HTML Adv Rec and URL Rec

HTML is a higher level recording. URL is a lower level recording.

Generally, you want to record in the highest level possible, to simplify things. However, if you encounter a "weird" issue, something may be pushed under the covers in HTML recording and you may need to step your level down to see if there are any correlations required which HTML mode may be missing.

This is a very high level explanation of the difference

The other advantage i have seen with URL-level recording is that it separates out the calls to sub-components, which can sometimes allow you to see if a specific screen component is taking an unusual amount of time to respond.

Yes, the analysis tool can sometimes do this, but if there are a large number of transactions then extracting information from the analysis tool can be painful.

URL Recording provides you an option of having different calls to each resource(which have their own URLs) of a page which you can intuitively include as transactions to look into troublesome components.

HTML also records these components, but, as a part of the total call.
