Your path to success is defined in the performance requirements for the system and in the performance test plan for the environment you are in. Such requirements should not in a method not subject to interpretation What is to be measured, how the sample is to be collected, any variance which is allowed in the sample and under what conditions the sample is to be collected.
THe mechanical aspects of what you want to test are straightforward. Place load on component A for particular business processes and then an asynchronous flow of data will be pushed through the other architectural components.
