    LoadRunner pricing method

Having consulted with HP, I was quoted a price to purchase LoadRunner not only based on the Controller and the # of Vusers, but also the protocol that I wanted. The Trial version I got from their site included every protocol and what I thought the entire protocol set might cost, they quoted that cost for just a single protocol.

That seemed greatly overpriced, especially for a single protocol, considering most client/server software touches more than one protocol on the document they provided "HP LoadRunner Protocols".

Has anyone else been quoted a price based on a specific protocol, i.e. .NET Record/Reply, Database, DCOM, Network, Remote Access, etc.. or have all the protocols been typically included?

Thanks in advance for any feedback you can provide.

    Re: LoadRunner pricing method

It's been a while since I've dealt with pricing, but yes, I believe this is what we encountered as well. This certainly was the case for QTP, and I'm almost positive it was the case for LR as well.

Mercury offers a unique product and they know it. They charge out the ear for everything... if you're working with a protocol they are the only ones to support, they're going to charge you a ton for it. Also, just be thankful you don't need GUI virtual users - you want to talk about a lot of money...

With that being said, it is worth the money.

Optioning LoadRunner is a lot like optioning a Jet Aircraft. The pricing model you are observing is correct.
