how to access data from Quality Center?
Hi guys! I'm a newbie in QTP. Just want to hear your thoughts on how to access my data in excel file from Quality Center. I hope you can share me some codes on how to do this, i really don't have an idea on how to do this..
Re: how to access data from Quality Center?
If you are completely new to this all, my advice is to first dig into some help files that come with the QC package (just log into QC and chosse help-documentation) and read up, then come back with some more specific questions.
To help you on your way, some pointers:
Quality Centre provides an object called the Open Test Architecture Client (a.k.a. OTAClient) this is *the* way to access data from outside QC. It has to generic ways of dealing with data:
Factories : feels a bit like working with the GUI of QC, but now by commands. Works quite simple once you get the hang of it.
Command (SQL) : low level access to the database. Very powerfull, but also very riskfull if you don't know what you're doing. If you are new, I wouldn't advice this method.
The OTA client is also used by the Addin's that are created by Mercury/HP. The tools are, however, limited to importing data FROM your Office file TO Quality Centre. (Although the help files keep on talking about exporting, I really think it's importing)
I personally don't really like the tools given by QC, but I have high demands and hate it when I do not know how a tool works (plus I have some experience with VBA already). I do think that for a quick solution, the Addin's are the way to go. You can also use the Addin as a start: request the password of the Addin from HP and you can hack it yourself.
Or you can start from scratch yourself: The OTA Client can be used in many languages as far as I know: I personally only have experience with VBA and VBS. VBA is for office, VBS can be used in the Workflow editor of Quality Centre. The workflow editor also provides some functionality without using the OTA Client, but I have no idea how that works.
Well...I think this should give you enough keywords to keep you busy for a while Good luck!
