I want to import test cases from excel and run my tests but I do not know overall procedure for this.
I can export my test case from excel to QC and see them in the QC, steps, designer, test, description etc. There is no problem until that step but I do not know how will I get run them.
I can not connect them to my pre-written tests from QTP. When I click to connect button, it wonly shows imported test cases, which has no scripts with them.
Let me tell you my problem in more detail.
Normally I write scripts in QTP, save them in QC project and run from QC. I re-wrote all my tests scripts as independent functions scripts in function library (independent means no OR use)
What I want to do is, import test cases from an excel, and link them to my actual tests or functions.
(automatically or manual. Step names are also names of functions in my functon library)
I want to connect an imported test step to an actual test (which is written in qtp)
I read the excel add-in manuel but nothing is mentioned for the setp after importing tests into QC.
And another question is , I wonder wehether I can connect test steps to a function rather than a test.
Because normally I write scripts in QTP, save them in QC project and run from QC. I re-wrote all my tests scripts as independent functions scripts in function library (independent means no OR use)
in the QC documentation it says that
ALM generates a test script skeleton based on the current design steps
I tried to use Generate Script option in "Design Steps" pane. Some choicee in Generate Script menu is for other tools and Load Runner etc. I do not know which one to use.For example if I choose ALT_SCENARIO from Generate scripts, it tries to download sth from somewhere ant generates this
This scenario includes 0 groups with the total number of 0 Vusers. There are 0 kinds of scripts which have 0 transactions and 0 rendezvous.
1 Hosts are available.
But I think this is for Load Test
What are those means ? And gain how can I link pre-written functions scripts (or qtp test scripts)to a design step ? Please help me.
Re: How to link excel-imported test cases to tests ?
You will most likely need to write a driver script to do this. Your imported tests will stay as they are and when you run your driver script it might for example read in all the tests in a particular test set and for each step in the tests call the appropriate function in your library based on the name. People often did this before BPT came along and some still do.
There are other options too e.g. you could create business components for each of functions/steps and then write a tool which imports your tests from excel by stringing together the appropriate business components. I'd leave the code in your library though and each component would just be a call to the function in the library.
