Migrating from TD 8.0 MS Access to QC 9.2 SQL Serv
I am at a client site trying to migrate TD 8.0 using MS Access DB to QC 9.2 using SQL Server 2005.
All the connectivity is good: using the Migration Tool I can connect to the source (TD) and target (QC) servers and see all the TD projects.
The first hurdle was (and the HP install doc does not tell you this) that the Migration Tool can not migrate an MS Access DB project.
I found an article:
... about converting from TD 8.0 MS Access to QC 8.2 which said you need to convert the projects to be migrated to use either Oracle, MS SQL or MSDE 2000 and it advised using MSDE 2000 since its free. I downloaded and installed MSDE 2000 and successfully converted a project by setting up the new MSDE DB server via Site Admin creating a new project using MSDE based on the original MS Access project. So far, so good.
When I started the Migration Tool again, instead of telling me I couldn't migrate the project because it was MS Access (because the new project I created is MSDE) ... it says:
"Cannot migrate project: database server <msde servername> is not defined in the target server"
This suggests to me that, in spite of the article suggesting converting Access to MSDE is all that's required to migrate, the MS Access project databases will have to be converted to MS SQL and not MSDE.
Do any of you know if this is true? Or is there actually a way to migrate from a TD project using MSDE to a QC using SQL Server?
Re: Migrating from TD 8.0 MS Access to QC 9.2 SQL Serv
The message from the migration tool means that you need to define the MSDE DB server as a QC92 DB Server, using the DB Servers tab of the QC92 site admin.
The projects will not be migrated to SQL Server : they will be migrated to QC92 new templates, in the database where they reside. That's why you need to declare the MSDE server to QC92.
You'll then have to copy these projects, using QC92, from the MSDE DB to SQL Server.

Ah .... just figured that out just before I saw your answer - makes sense - thanks.
