I have read about arguments both 'for' and 'against' taking work very seriously. I have been a hard worker myself and get lost in my work many times. Some people find this to be pretty serious on my part. And there are times when i am not doing much and am quite casual in my endeavour. I am struggling to find that healthy balance i can maintain at workplace. Would like to know of other people's attitude about work.

Buddy you always need to enjoy not only your work but your enviornment too. As a QA/Tester our relationship with the delelopment team is like that of the cartoon series Tom & Jerry.
Try to be casual with the project team but be very serious when you find their issues and don't budge.....Sometimes the developers/Project team try to downplay Usability issues thats when you need to put your foot sternly in and tell them what they need to do.
Taking your work seriously is good but taking it too seriously won't do you any good

I think the first thing to recognize is that 'hard working' or 'not doing much' should not necessarily equate to 'being serious' or 'being casual'.
There are many times that when I'm working very hard and long hours on a project or working through something complex, a bit of humor and a more 'casual' approach helps keep me sane, and helps keep me focused on my work - the same is true for many people I've worked for and with.
It is quite possible to be a hard worker and to take your work seriously without being serious in the way that you act 100% of the time.
That said, it's still important to maintain professionalism in either case, and what's considered acceptable might vary broadly from one organization to another.
my approach is that I am very diligent, responsible, and motivated.. so you could call that "serious".
but I also keep things very light. I like to have fun and talk about funny stuff and post odd geeky comics around my office. So in that sense, I'm not *that* serious
