Windows Vista (Beta) testing?
Anyone doing any testing using Windows Vista yet? Within the last half hour, I got assigned a new project where we're going to install a proprietary media player which needs to work on Vista. The concern is the new security level that has been recently added to Vista. Can an application be installed as an Admin but then the application must be run by a user with less access/authority than Admin.
Am currently doing some research about Vista but was curious about any stories anyone has encountered with new installations of applications.
Re: Windows Vista (Beta) testing?
Okay, I've done some research. What I now need to know...if anyone has done ANYTHING with Vista and developed applications with regards to their installs and running of the application using a service.
When installation takes place, the install must be done as an administrator. I am assuming this, as I haven't found conclusive evidence yet. But what about running the application using a service?
WinFX (Win32 on XP and NT) ses the User Account Protection (UAP) to manage security to avoid malware installs. What the UAP does do is allow users to log onto an application with minimal priviledges to avoid user errors of configuration etc.
Has anyone come across this situation yet? I realize this is very new, not many people are developing applications using services for Windows Vista but we all will be doing testing soon enough. The biggest concern is the new security features of WinFX.
