Anyone here using Akimbi Slingshot? ...

We're beginning to use VMWare a bit in development and testing. If I understand the Akimbi tools correctly, they are not VMs themselves, but rather tools to more effectively manage VMWare VMs?

If that's the case, how much better is it than any management tools supplied directly from VMWare?

Interested in people's experiences with these.

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris

Yes! We love it. In fact we have a Mercury User Group meeting today featuring Akimbi. We are also Beta testing the ESX version soon to be released.

Sling Shot overs much more integration than Virtual Manager. It also works with Microsoft's Virtual Server as well as VMWare. This is a plus for us as VS will handle OS/2 but VMWare does not. We have a one button defect interface with packages the image up to and including the defect and delivers it to Development. Hard for them to say they need more data or it doesn't fail on their machine.

Rich - you have any numbers on how much time/effort it saves you (your company) using SlingShot instead of manually controlling the process?

I ask as we are in need of this tool for our testing effort due to the amount of configurations needing to be tested and lack of time and server space per install. We are moving over to VS setups, but the process to control it all for testing needs is staggering and a lot just gets passed over due to this.

Sorry Tony, no figures yet as we have only just started with it and are really waiting for the ESX release. But I'll try and keep you posted. One thing's for sure, It ain't cheap!
