Go over to the Downloads area of this site and go into the Templates group. There you will see a download for a Test Management tool template in Excel. Download it and give it a look. It's what I call the poor man's TestDirector. Using worksheet and cell linking/references/formulas you can track your testing progress.

Excel spread sheets are a joke like doing it in MS word...
Repository based tools are the only effective way to manage large test suites especially if you have complex systems or a wide product range.
Why do people resort to MS products whenever you need to document something ? Excel is good for simple accounting / number crunching....thats about it. I have seen many companys run their business on excel spread sheets.... a very flawed way of doing it, especially when the business gets big.
