    Contradicting Perceptions about Quality Assurance

    Hi All,
Can anybody help me out in providing contradictory perceptions about quality assurance(majorly in software companies).
There are lot of contradictions about QA and i am looking on to get a compiled list of all possible contradicting perceptions.
I would appreciate if reply will send also to my email address - rohit156@rediffmail.com

Re: Contradicting Perceptions about Quality Assurance

Could you give an example of what you mean?

    Maybe:
Test functions should be under the management of the production teams they provide test to / Test functions should NOT be part of the customers team, they need impartiallity through independance.

Testing costs money on top of already stratched budgets / testing saves money through ensuring product integrity

QA is not a professional career path as Development for example / testing is much more involved and requires greater professional focus due to the breadth of knowledge required.

Pies are good / Diets are good

Re: Contradicting Perceptions about Quality Assurance

Ok, this is pretty open-ended but as a general theory of 'how it works' I figure most contradictory ideas about QA are based on how independent one believes the QA role should be:
    - to whom does QA report? to the CEO, Dev VP, Product Manager, Project Manager, Dev Manger, Dev Lead ...
    - who makes ship / don't ship decisions, should QA have any influence beyond merely reporting the facts
    - should QA share plans with Dev, should they in fact be a helper/coach to Dev
    - does QA truly possess it's own schedule time or should it be expected to simply give it up whenever Dev goes overtime

Re: Contradicting Perceptions about Quality Assurance

And let's not forget the old chest nuts:
    1. QA=Test
    2. QA=Test is the safety net for the project
    3. QA=Test is about catching bugs

Companies that believe the above are usually the ones that cut QA=Test resources first and blame QA=Test for any delays/problems - how contradictory can you get?

    The one that gets me:

QA is not here to find problems. If they do, they ARE the problem. They are here to prove that our processes work and the product is ready to ship.

    Or try this one:

If a problem is found in the field, it is QA's fault for not catching it. The developer/process is not at fault for inserting the flaw!

A variation of Michael's statement: QA finds a problem and the Dev manager goes to upper management and convinces them that it is a QA failure, because "the app is ready to ship but QA won't sign off."

Re: Contradicting Perceptions about Quality Assurance

The one I hate is when Development down-plays the importance of QA saying that "WE WRITE GOOD CODE" and QA is trying to make us look bad, but then proceeds to become sloppy and write worse code because they know QA will catch the errors.

Re: Contradicting Perceptions about Quality Assurance

Heh, these are all good, here's the one I like the least:
    a) here's a job, here's some money to do it, tell us what's wrong with the product
    b) hey you're not a real team player, you keep talking about what's wrong with the product

Or how about, "you guys start scripting tests, I'll go see what the projects is"!
