Do anybody know how we basically test a mainframe application. For example i am testing a bank application to determine if the user user is able to see the changes made in his account on the web and the pageis connected to a bank mainframe...i basically want to know how they this application and how they test the data in the mainframe.
Re: testing mainframes
Does your web server go through the mainframe application to access the data, or does it go straight to the database?
You might want to test the process at every point along the way - from the web server persepctive, the mainframe application perspective, and the database perspective. Are changes made in each area reflected in the others? For example, if the mainframe application executes a debit, does the account information on the web reflect that in the list of transactions and the new account balance.
Is the web server read-only or can the customer manage their account over the web (online banking, like transfers and EFTs.)
You might want to test security in each area (you'd hate to enforce great security on the web server only to see that people can bypass the security by updating the database directly.)
Does that help you think of more things to test?
