SWEBOK Review

So many people in the test community are unhappy with SWEBOK that there is a grass roots initiative to oppose it. Once appproved, SWEBOK probably will widely influence university curricula in software engineering, the outcome of litigation regarding liability for software defects, and other areas of our profession. These people are posting comments to the SWEBOK web site saying that they do not approve of SWEBOK in its present form. I encourage you to submit your impressions also by the June 30 deadline.

Re: SWEBOK Review

Ross, I'm in the dark on this one. I've just downloaded the document, but it'll take some time to get through. 228 pages is not a small initiative. I'll do my best.

Are the people objecting, asking for revisions or a full re-write? Or full rejection of it?

If adopted will this become a piece of the IEEE ratings grading process?

Sorry for the questions, but I'm hoping I'm not the only one who hasn't kept up with this one and needs a little help.

Ross,
What are their main complaints?

Re: SWEBOK Review

Again, I haven't read it so I don't have an opinion yet, but how effective can a review be for this?
Partial quote below from the Call for Review at;
http://www.swebok.org/
Call for Reviewers
Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (Trial Version)
Review Period: June 2, 2003 to June 30, 2003
...(portions cut here...)
The Trial Version of the SWEBOK Guide was endorsed in 2001 for trial usage by the Board of Governors of the IEEE Computer Society and is undergoing the final steps for publication as a Technical Report by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO TR 19759).
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica">If the pilot was completed two years ago, is the call for review just a user acceptance review?
Can change be affected this late in the game? Do you think they'll listen?

Now, I'm not arguing at all. It might need to be changed or scrapped. I'll peek at it this weekend.

Re: SWEBOK Review

One place to start is with Professor Kaner's comments. You can see his blog at http://blackbox.cs.fit.edu/blog/kaner/

I believe he is going to update and add to his comments this weekend.

I plan to write up some comments myself this weekend and will be happy to share them if you contact me directly.

I'll pop in there and check it out.

But you got to tell me what a 'BLOG' is ? I've been hearing that term for about a month now, and I know it has something to do with a web site.. but other than that... ??

Re: SWEBOK Review

Jean

Please excuse my not answering your earlier question, which was about how effective a review can be at this point. That is a reasonable question.

I first looked at SWEBOK about two years ago and saw things I liked as well as areas of concern -- and never got around to doing anything about it.

There seems to have been an under-representation of the voices of the test community, presumably because we have chosen not to participate. Meanwhile, SWEBOK is gathering steam with little input from the test community. Imagine being expected to follow a set of test procedures on the job which had been largely designed by people with little or no testing experience.

I think we can still significantly and positively influence it with a few hours or even minutes of our time.

Re: SWEBOK Review

A BLOG is simply a site or page with an on-going series of the author's thoughts and musings. It is considered very trendy -- all the fashionable people have one.

Re: SWEBOK Review

I of course do not have a blog. My model for fashion is Prince Charles of England -- he is considered in fashion circles to be hopelessly dorky and so out of date that I figure he must really be 20 years ahead of his time.

Re: SWEBOK Review

JeanJ - BLOG's name comes from "web log".

How uncool are you?

J/K - I think not knowing what a blog is is probably a better indicator of just how cool you are.
Gabba Gabba Hey
