Statistic Required: New bugs raised per fix

I think it's something like 1 new error raised to every 3 fixes - could be way off though...does anyone have the answer?

Re: Statistic Required: New bugs raised per fix

According to the Software Engineering Institute, a modification to existing code has a 20% to 50% chance of introduucing a new error, an unintended side effect. I havve seen studies done by (a) IBM on their MVS / zOS operating system which put the number at 9%, and (b) Alcatel for backbone Internet switches which said over 20%.

To be fair, most of the introduced defects are trivial and about 2/3 are seen and removed immediately by the authors (the software engineers) before we testers get to see the revised version of the system.
