try to mark the flowchart in it's original program, eg VISIO 2000, then press [ctrl]+[c] (copy).
Change to WORD and paste it at the appropriate position ([ctrl]+[v]).

If you turn on the "Drawing" Toolbar in Word you can add all of the flowchart boxes and arrows and create it right there in the document. Check along the bottom of the Word screen - if there's a toolbar with an Autoshapes button on it that's the Drawing toolbar.
Right click on the toolbars at the top of the screen and select Drawing if it's not visible.

I believe it's better to save a flowchart in a vector format: *.wmf, etc. It will save space and quality of the image would be much better.
