    Open Concept Office

From a previous (long ago) thread, we generally agreed that we like working in the same area as our developers. It aids discussion and team work.

However, I am now being faced with moving to a new area in an "open concept" office where we'll all be sitting, out in the open, looking at each other.

Is there a possibility of too much 'togetherness' with developers?

    Ugh!...Shudder!

I find working in a cube farm has too many distractions as it is. I imagine I would dislike an "open plan" office by yet another order of magnitude.

I do my best work when I put on my headphones and drown out the distractions with music - I'm not sure how effective that would be when there are visual distractions as well.

    Good luck.

I am used to working in a room as every employee has a separate room (not a cubicle)
in my office. We can close the door (also lock) and work inside the room. There is so much of privacy here. For me this is an ideal working atmosphere. I don't know if i will be able to adjust if have to leave this place and start working in cubicles atmosphere.

i think working with developers is very prodcutive, you get to know the background of the system better..
the drawback is, sometimes u got to compromise your testing because of the developer is close friend of u...

    working environment, digits?
If you have not seen the movie "Office Space", please watch it (no execuses now that you have that long weekend coming)!
What you'll see in this movie is exactly how our working environment looks like.

To temporarily overcome the view of your "open concept office", as you walk in, focus (block out everything that resembles an engineering lab/area) and look across the office as far as you can, imagine (sorry had to borrow this John Lennon) and say "Thank you Lord! My dream is coming true. I see little horses running around my wide-open farm!"

digits, you're gonna love this movie (Guaranteed - unless you really hate Jennifer Anniston?)! They even showed it in the Comedy Channel already.
    Blockbuster Video probably has it.
    And while you're watching it...
just make sure you are not eating 'em pies with your b/f next to you
(remember what the 3 stooges did with pies and cakes) peace

    Re: Open Concept Office

I'm in a situation a bit different from what I've seen posted thus far. As one of our developers states, we are "Two teams separated by 1276 Northwest Frequent Flyer air miles plus a cab ride".

I would give up important body parts to be located closer to our developers. In order to mitigate this issue, we have to communicate constantly via conference call, e-mail, and whatever means are available.

One thing that I think we definitely miss out on is the "water cooler conversations." But that's the nature of the beast.

Beyond that, I have worked in an open environment for the past year. One of the things that has come out of this is that people aren't as able to hide their weaknesses. In turn, these weaknesses are development opportunities...just gotta turn 'em around and train 'em where they could use a little help. Personally, I enjoy working in an open environment...and would be reluctant to go back to a cube farm.

    Re: Open Concept Office

I work in a 'cube farm' with developers down several 'pods'. Even in this environment, if a developer overhears a discussion regarding a bug or problem, they try to fix it before I can get it defined and logged. When they do that, they tend to avoid documenting all the changes they made to fix the problem and often tell me not to bother submitting the bug. (I always do anyway, of course.) I'm guessing that would be much worse in an open office setting.
