Who is a test analyst ?

    Hey guys,

Can somebody be more precise on explaining the job of a test analyst ?

In what way does it differ from that of a Tester?

    Thanks,
    Scorpio

    Cheers,
    Kundhu

Re: Who is a test analyst ?

    Hi there,

In my experiences, they're the same position. The only distinction I've seen drawn is that an analyst is more involved in creation of test cases, as opposed to straight execution of cases someone else designed. Another would be in analyzing the results of automated or performance tests...

Generally speaking, though, the only distinctions I've seen is between a Tester or Test Analyst and a QA Analyst, who is more responsible for process and documentation than for hands on testing.

But in most of the companies where I've been, all of the folks involved in any level of QA/QC are wearing all of the hats!

Re: Who is a test analyst ?

    Would you consider someone who...
-Writes test plans and test cases
    -Writes and executes automated scripts
    -Attends requirements meetings
    -Holds test plan reviews
    -Perform all aspects of testing
    -Analyzes the results
-Enter defects and maintains bug tracking database
-Gives the "OK" for a release of an application

...Quality Assurance of Software Testing? These are mostly my responsibilities. *I* think I fall somewhere in the middle. I'm really a one man show/department. After reading the numerous discussions on what QA vs. Testing is, I can't make up my mind. Maybe I'm a Software Quality Assurance Tester...if there is such a thing. What do you think?

Re: Who is a test analyst ?

Hehehehe.. my point exactly. I think there are many more people who fall into that category than people who are one or the other.

Even now, I'm working on evaluating tools, bringing in automated tools, and setting up an automation plan and suite, as well as doing the hands on testing, etc.

I like to say QA Specialist.

How about Quality Engineer (QE) ? I think you should belongs to QE category. Do you configure server from scratches in all kind of platforms (UNIX, NT, AS/400) in order to perform testing (that's a one man show). If yes then you are a QE.

Re: Who is a test analyst ?

I thought I'd try reviving this post as I'm currently considering changing some of my team members' titles from "(Junior/Senior) QA Tester" to "(Junior/Senior) Test Analyst".
I am getting rid of the QA part of the titles because I will soon have a colleague who will be focusing on QA (especially process improvement) for our whole organisation and I want to raise the profile of testing. I'm also fed up of people asking "Can you QA this?" all the time.
The only real reason for adding the Analyst part is that I think it will make the team feel and appear more professional. I've done a search of these forums and not found any other views - what do you think?
