How Important is the QA and testing Process in the Organization

With the economic slump in the market, how important is the role of QA in the Organization? I am new to QA but i am in the Engineering working as a Software Engineer in development since 4 years.
Actually i got an oppurtunity to join as Lead QA Engineer with a company . I told them that i am from pure development background but they are O.K. with that. Do you guys recommend me to join QA or is it better to stick onto development. I heard that most of the Lay-offs in the Engineering is from Documentation and QA. Is it true? Though i have a CMM Level 5 background i am still thinking to join in QA. Guys can you help me with your suggestions. I think the company that i am joining is using Rational Team Test. Are the rational tools best ones in the Market? How do i get all these information?

Re: How Important is the QA and testing Process in the Organization

    Hello there!

This is a GREAT place to get some of the info you're looking for.

First, as to QA.. if you have the heart, patience, and skills for it, I personally think it's a *great* place to be. There is some downturn in QA jobs, but no more than other parts of the industry that I've seen. The companies that do most of their cutting in those areas are often those that are moving to outsourcing for QA functions, as opposed to eliminating it entirely. Those who do eliminate will be back, I'm sure, when the quality of software suffers and it effects their revenue.

A CMM background is something that will especially help in large companies that have a true committment to quality, or those that are regulated (such as banking or FDA related) that have to have the formal processes, for auditing purposes.

For Automated tools, try doing a search on the "Automated Tools" list, or browse through any of them. It's a common question, and one that's usually best answered by the environment you are in. Rational, in my opinion, is definitely considered one of the 'Big 3' in tools, and is not shoddy by any means.

And for more information on 'general' testing things, just browse around on this board, and click around on some of the tabs at the top of the page that go to stickyminds.com and other such areas.

Good luck, and welcome from 'the other side'.

Thank you so much annie with your valuable information.I heard that this QA Community is the best when i spoke to John Green from automation expertise. He advised me to join this highly interactive forum.
I would be glad if the remaining people also give their valuable suggestions and keep the spirit of QA high. I am new into this QA so any help from you would be highly appreciable.
    thanking everybody in advance.

I dont really keep up with the standards of the industry..."what I dont know wont be the reason I get fired"...but I can tell you that my QA department is one of few in my company that has never been effected by cutbacks (knock on wood)

Re: How Important is the QA and testing Process in the Organization

I had my 6-month review yesterday and my boss and I were talking about how things are slowing down, but my responsibilities will increase. Things like automated test tool purchase, a greater QA presence in projects, and hiring a second person here once we have a couple more projects sold by the sales staff.

I think while the industry downturns are affecting all of us, I'm lucky because my company's clientelle is a very (VERY) diversified group. We have customers from consultants to NASCAR-type stuff.

QA has a very important role in the organization. Serious organization definately give top priority to QA and they trust this department so much that nothing goes out unless certified by the QA. Where as some organizations don't and they have to suffer as a result of that.

As far as your decision joining QA is concerned it depends on you. whether you enjoy doing what you are doing or not ? as simple as that. But you must keep in mind that you ought to have good analytical skills to be successful in QA and well verse with the software development life cycle and software testing methodologies.

large no. Lay offs in QA and documentation might be true. But I guess you want to do what you really want to do and all this should not matter.
You are not going to open a barber shop if it is demand ...or do you ?
There is no harm in it if you really enjoy doing that.
Your last Q was regarding Rational suite, Rational tools do provide effective solutions. NOw again depends what do you really want to do ? There are several article on qaforums.com on this .
IF you want a career in software automation you might want to look at Mercury Interactive's products along with Rational's.

    Good Luck !

Re: How Important is the QA and testing Process in the Organization

    Novicetester,

I do hope you recognize the difference between Quality Assurance and Test Engineering. Though in many companies the functions are performed by the same people and the terms are used interchangeably, the two are *very* different. You could start by reading a few books on the subject. I started my career with Glenford Myers' "The art of software testing" - it remains by far the best introduction for a newcomer.

Test engineering is a specialised field requiring skills that one acquires with learning and experience. It is not like learning a language like Java. It is sad and shocking that many companies just pick up anyone and everyone and expect them to start work in a totally new field. This is simply organizational immaturity - I call it the pointy haired boss logic. If your body is warm and you are still breathing, you are on the job.

My advice to you is to first identify your area of operation. If your turf is process improvement then concentrate on that. If it is software testing, then pick up operational skills that correspond to that. Trying both and trying to lead a team at the same time smells like a recipe for disaster.
All the best and keep us posted...
