Few of the things which can help you in keeping updated-

    1. Be connected with testing community through forums like these.

    2. Read articles by good authors like Cem Kaner, James Bach etc.

    3. Read about new testing tools available in market.

    4. Read books by good authors, most of them work like reference materials but a few can be a good read for understanding latest trends in industry.

This is actually a great question and one that I ask to everyone whom I interview for a testing position. Most people have no good response.

I read a lot, be it websites, magazines or books. I also spend time trying out different testing tools even if we do not use them in my company. I also like to learn new scripting languages, especially when they complement a new tool I am working with.

If you are a serious QA person you will seek out every source of information and knowledge to help you become a better professional. You have taken the first step, now don't give up. Go for it! The information is out there, find it!

If at all possible, attend as many professional conferences as possible, even on your own time and expense. Some may be a waste, but others will be a treasure trove of information.

Talk to your friends who are in testing field and discuss about their approach, tools, technologies, etc.

1- Subscribe to QA publications and online forums
2- Attend local and regional software testing seminars

Re: How shuld testers keept themselves updated

All are great suggestions. A couple I found extremely helpful in maintaining myself on current subjects have already been stated:
    1) Talk to fellow SQAers throughout the industry. You get to know them through work, friends, boards like this. Some of the best learning experiences was hanging with a very good friend of mine and the two of us discussing testing concepts.
    2) Go to conferences if you can as someone had mentioned. I went to StarWest last year and what I found was I learned from the tutorials as well as the seminars but I also learned by hanging out at the bar in the evenings, meeting loads of people and we would all talk til way past the bar closed. When I have a question about something, I usually have one contact or another to call/email to find that answer. And they share their experiences with me.
    3) Networking websites based on occupation are another great way to see what people are doing and learn. I wonder if any of the social networks would be an option as well although I find them to be a waste of time for myself so I haven't checked if there are professional contacts.
    4) There are so many training websites that offer articles, white papers as well as this forum.
Going out of your comfort zone requires failure. True genius is measured by your recovery.
