Degrading Web apps gracefully...

What should developers know?

Without thinking about it too much, I pitched an article about "degrading gracefully" to a web developer site, successfully convincing the editor that I could cover the reasons that a website should work with all sorts of browser clients (not just the latest and greatest), how to design a site to degrade gracefully, and tips and tricks from the masters. Now I'm wondering... what was I THINKING?! I don't know this stuff off the top of my head!

So I turn to you. You're far more cognizant of the frustrations than I am. Maybe you can help me figure out what this article (or series of articles, depending on how much info we can gather) ought to say.

What are the important points to include? Both at the general level ("Why you should do this. No I mean it YOU SHOULD DO THIS!") and in detail ("Here's several open source tools than can make the job easier"). What ought developers to know... that they evidently do not?

Degrading Web Apps Gracefully
It's important to build websites that work no matter which browser or platform is used. Here's several important techniques--starting with the philosophy of progressive enhancement--to help you achieve that goal.

I missed this the first go around... I initially thought it had something to do with a tactful way of telling developers their web site stunk.
