I am looking for a tool that will allow me to compare the registry before installing an application and after installation. The tool should list or mark differences in keys, values and data. I have searched the SQA forum archives but haven't found this topic.
What I have tried so far is exporting the registry before and immediately after installing the product, creating pdf files from the 2 registries, and comparing them by Adobe Acrobat. That didn't work; Acrobat worked for a while then
displayed an error. I don't have teh error message available at the moment, but will get it.
What tools do you recommend for registry comparison before and after installing a program?
The Adobe Acrobat error message, when i tried to compare the two registries was: "Expected a dict object"
I clicked OK on that, and Acrobat displayed the generic message saying it encountered a problem and needs to close.
Well i dont know how far this tool will help you. But you can try "INCTRL5", Which is an excellent tool used for camparing the registry keys before and after installing the application and gives you an report. Try this tool TesterWorld
Like Corey said, when I have done compares it was either with a registry export as a text file and a diff on the files. Or if you know what branches will be affected I have also used Python to export the branches and do matches on the results and what I knew should be there.
Tools are nice, but sometimes for small things like this learning how to do it on your own is the fun part.
