build verification which is done by the test engineer is either sanity or smoke testing.but what is the term given for the verification done by the developer before release of the build to the tester to test.

Though in places where I have worked Developers don't release a build to QA, but that's just me.
If you are referring to a verification of the build by a Release Engineer to QA I would still call it Smoke Testing, or a Build Verification Test if you want, use of terms may differ. Builds may also be farther than they appear.

according to different factory or companies that would differ and BVT (BUILD VERIFICATION TEST) is combination of both. This BVT can be used for the analysis of the PASS vs FAIL ratio etc. BVT is also called as Build acceptance test.Any build that fails the build verification test is rejected,and testing continues on the previous build (provided there has been at least one build that has passed the acceptance test).
