How to test functional requirements

Hi

How to test functional requirements early in project, so that we can reduce spec issues later in the project.

Is there any process or checklist available to test the requirements before they are converted to test cases.

Thanks in advance

Thanks and Regards

Sunil,

Firstly I have removed your email address as the purpose of the forum is to discuss and share knowledge here, using email does not support that purpose.

I will also move your thread to the functional requirements forum as that seems to be more appropriate for your question.

Welcome to SQAforums and as a new member I encourage you to read this thread:

For verifying Functional Requirements I usually use what is called the SMART method (if you browse the forums you will find additional information on this)

I check that each requirement is:
S - Specific
M - Measurable
A - Attainable
R - Realistic
T - Testable/Timely

You beat me to it, Lynne. Was that acronym being used before I first started using it here? Just wondering if I should have copyrighted it...

Sunil - Lynne didn't mention that the review of SMART requirements can take place in a tabletop environment - well before any development even begins. That is where you look for ambiguous requirements, conflicting requirements, non-testable, etc. It is also by far the cheapest place and time to look for these.

I will admit I learned it from you and use it. Maybe I should have said that in my post.

I'm not the first to come up with it either. Just picking on you. I don't believe in copyrighting knowledge.

Not sure how old it is (I came across it several years ago), but Wikipedia (in typical Wikipedian fashion) has more than you ever wanted to know: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMART_%..._management%29

You can pick on me - I will do the same for you sometime.
