    Database Testing

In functional testing, how important is database testing. As far as i know, we can test database for data integrity, validation, etc... Is it possible to test database without front-end. If so what are the different methods?
    Thanks in advance

    Re: Database Testing

Yes...database can be tested at back end by directly firing queries to it. Then results of front end and back end can be matched.

    Re: Database Testing

It can be achieved by you contacting the DBA or developer for the database and have them go over what data is in it, and how to access it.

I can give you a query, but it isn't going to be valid for your database, those are always application dependent.

As for stored procedures, those are dependent on your application and the type of database you are using (SQL,ORA,MySQL,Acesss).
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results

    Re: Database Testing

Database testing is very important part of functional testing. It should check data-integrity,Validation,etc.Also,whenever subsequent queries are fired at backend it should check data concurrency using serializability concept.Such testing has paramount importance in Disrtibuted databases too.

    Re: Database Testing

Stored procedure can be executed without back-end, i suggest you get db connection details, credentials, table names, procedure name and access to a query analyser as toad, ms query analyser then you do not need front end to test all data in a application......

there cannot be a sample query until you have all these details. If you are not good at database , ask your DBA to help you out.

    Re: Database Testing

In my opinion Database testing is one area where pure black box testing is completely inapropriate. You DO need database knowledge in order to test a database. Also some part of the testing could be carried out without any query: checking the data definitions, tables and colums data types, constraints,...

    Re: Database Testing

DB check is highly used to validate the Query & report screens ( depends on application ). collect the query from ur developer and execute it in toad by validating explain plan . here u have to notice the cost & full table scan access then provide ur suggestion to fine tune that query.( Needs some knowledge abt SQL ).

another thing is u have to validate the column& datatype size. this should be synch with front -end.( depends on screen )

In multi user test, u have to validate whether they are locking the selected row in Table level or row level.
