Are there any test tools out there that are a stand out when it comes to testing an API? All of my QA experience has always been with a turnkey application. I have recently been asked to help is testing one of our API's. The engineers have created a studio that will test the API, but it's only testing portions of it that are included in the studio. Which tool do you reccomend for testing the API? Take in to consideration I am by no means a programmer, so I am looking for something pretty straight forward. BTW, the application is build in VB6 and another in C++.
Thanks in advance, and I apologize if I posted in the wrong section.
Unfortunately there are such an assumption that tester can’t test API. Of course developer should ALSO test whatever interface he creates (graphic or programming).
In my practice we’ve used one of the following approaches:
1)Developer create “test driver” and tester write scripts in specific script language or XML for this driver
2)Developer create “API GUI wrapper” that allow tester to call API from UI, providing inputs and observing outputs
3)Tester write test scripts in the same IDE as API “customer” (programmer on the end application) will. For example just code in VB
4)Tester, developer or both together creates tests in JUnit
If you want a tool and don’t what to use IDE that programmer uses, I suggest searching for unit test tools.
