1. ## Metrics

do u think metrics will help us in improving the quality of testing?

2. ## Re: Metrics

Metrics, if collected properly, can give you the information that you need to identify where your testing processes can be improved.

In themselves they cannot improve the quality of testing.

3. ## Re: Metrics

Well said Bill.

4. ## Re: Metrics

And you need to decide exacly what you want to measure. Metrics provides the backbone to what needs to be changed.

Do not start out with a hundred different metrics. Eyes will glaze over. Pick a couple and build from there.

5. ## Re: Metrics

Try to ask (and get responses to some questions for each metrics you consider):

Why to measure ?
Who will need it?
what I can do with the results, when I have them?
How to measure?
How much it willl cost me to measure it ?(money, effort, time)

6. ## Re: Metrics

A good metric is:
1. Objective
2. Easy to gather data for
3. Meaningful
4. Simple

7. ## Re: Metrics

One problem with metrics for test is that many of the useful ones need to come from outside the tester's realm.
For example, production support figures.

Another is that, there are lies, damn lies, and statistics. Make sure your metric gathering is not just to prove something already decided, make sure they are genuine inquiries.

And remember, metrics are to improve the processes and not to point a finger. To err is human, to blame is dumb, to fix the process is future proofing.

Hi,

With out measure we cann't improve anything

Example

Day-2-Day:
If want to buy a shirt then comes metric 42inch/40inch

Engg:if want to make hole in a job drill bit size comes as a metric

so its important.

Cost to Measure:

it depends on how accurate we measure what we measure and when we measure..

------------

As far as Software metrics is conern

Effort, defect, size and schedule are the basic metrics..

But the thing is
If we take Engineering, we have measuring instruments which has been calibrated.
for eg.. Vernier Calipers, Screw Guage.

But if u come to software Testing..
there is no physical instrument which will tell us that if u use this matrix, u will get the acruate result,
can any body give there suggestions please

10. ## Re: Metrics

I love the idea easy to collect. If it is not easy to collect, the risk of creative data is increased.
