have to create test data for my application. we
are using SQL and i need to create test data. Is there any other way to create test data other than manually. Please tell me . As to create the data manually its taking me ages.
Inbrief: I have to create ome master data. like around 1000 customers. and their dummy addresses then some join tables etc
Have you thought about using :
- string or number generation (excel can create such data, or you can program your own tool,
- picking up names in directories or phone books, and changing some part of the data so that there are no real names, adresses,...
- making a copy of your own customer list (or prospects or whatever) and changing the confidential data so as to create some randomness.
By the way you can use these lists as inputs for test automation.
Can your company spend 250 to 1000 dollars ? if yes, there are tools out there which can do exactly the stuff you are asking. Search for data generation tools in the forums and you would get a list. DataFactory from quest is the only one I can remember - top of my head.
Yes you can use dynamic SQL queries to generate test data.
This requires knowledge of SQL and a database with some data in it (you can use a copy of the production database. However you might wish to contact your database administrator to create the adequate scripts and have access to the tables. Unless you have a good enough knowledge of SQL to do it by yourself.
There's also a very reasonable tool called datatech which we have been using.
Life should NOT be a trip to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an cool and well preserved body, but rather to skid in, chocolate in one hand, beer in the other, body wrecked, totally worn out and screaming WOO HOO what a ride!
Have you taken a look at Compuware's File-Aid for Client Server product. It is very helpful in extracting data, converting data, comparing data, etc. I suggest checking out their website to learn more.
